Sheep Shearing and Animal Care

Registration is closed for this event
Join fellow farmers and aspiring farmers on Friday, May 19th, 9:30 am-12:30 pm in Gurley, AL at the personal farm of Marguerite McClintock of Alchemy Farms and Plants LLC to learn more about tending to your flock! In this workshop, we'll cover sheep shearing, hoof maintenance, bottle feeding, eye care, and how to give a sheep a shot. In addition to these technical skills, we'll discuss herd health and sustainable grazing through the lens of organic practices, including biodiversity of cover crops for grazing and organic practices in regard to animal health, breeding, and nutrition. This is a great workshop to attend if you're interested in future sheep farming or want to connect with other farmers in Alabama. See you there! Lunch provided! This workshop and the Alabama CRAFT Network are supported through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). TOPP is a program of the USDA Organic Transition Initiative and is administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) National Organic Program (NOP).

What is CRAFT?

CRAFT stands for Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training and is a model for on-farm peer-to-peer training and network-building for farmers. The original CRAFT network formed in upstate New York and has been replicated many times since, adapted to meet the needs of each particular place.

Alabama CRAFT includes farm owners/operators as well as farm interns, apprentices, and employees, and aspiring farmers. It builds on past efforts to build community and share knowledge – including but not limited to the Regional Alabama Farmer Socials, and ASAN’s kindling workdays and crop mobs and Skillshare Trainings.
